Overview

It was originally founded in 1858 and (fun fact) is the second oldest zoo in Germany after the zoo in Berlin. Its original location was not large enough to allow for expansion as the zoo grew, hence in 1874 the zoo moved to where it is today.

The Frankfurt Zoo (officially titled The Frankfurt am Main City Zoological Garden) features over 4,500 animals from more than 510 species on over 14 hectares of area. The zoo contains an aquarium, a reptile hall, and an insect house and it was also among the first in Europe to successfully breed the okapi, black rhinoceros, and bongo antelope.

The location is in downtown Frankfurt (Innenstadt). Upon entering the zoo entrance you will first need to purchase a ticket. Alternatively, if you are visiting the city of Frankfurt (as a tourist) you may want to purchase the city card over our partner which gives you discounts to the zoo (up to 16% off ticket prices) as well as several other benefits and discounts throughout the city. The entrance is somewhat like a jungle and are created as such throughout the zoo itself. Overall the zoo is designed well, similar to a botanical garden with many greenish areas.

There is several amenities and things to do for children aside from just watching animals including a petting zoo. You'll find a place to purchase snacks and food, toilets, and other amenities throughout the facility.

Children will enjoy seeing the animals, however, one note is that there are no signs in english (regarding information on the animals). You'll need roughly 2-3 hours to walk around and see whole grounds.

Prices are also very reasonable, and can be seen on the official website. €13 for adults, €6 for ages 6-18, and children under 5 are free. Families pay €30 which includes 2 adults and up to 4 children. Childrens wagons can be rented for a small fee, and the zoo is wheelchair accessible.

We do not recommend coming by car. Public transportation is better, however if arriving from further out, you'll need to find parking nearby.
