Cala Gran
Overview
Cala d'Or features several coves, with a majority belonging to the municipality of Santanyi. It is roughly 50 meters wide and 100 meters long, with a mix between sand and rocks. Towards the front of the beach, you'll find umbrellas and beach chairs for rent, as well as space to place your towel on the sand. The back part of the cala is a completely open sand area. This specific cove is the largest, as its name indicates, of the coves belonging to Cala d'Or.
Along the sides of the Cala you'll find that the cliffs retain their vegetation and environment and both sides provide walkable areas to head further out of the cala. The buildings on either side are low-rise houses and nicely integrated into the surroundings.
The cliffs provide protection from the wind, which keeps the waters calm. Cala Gran is a great place for families and persons with reduced mobility as there are several entrance points, both stairs and pathways along with a wooden walkway. There are a few restaurants and chiringuitos that offer snacks and drinks. You will also find public toilets towards the entrance of the Cala along with showers that lead directly onto pavement.
It is located towards the center of town, hence it is a busy tourist beach in the summer months along with the town itself. Parking close to Cala Gran is virtually impossible and will need to be done within free or paid parking spaces around the area.
Overall a great family cove to visit for children and families with all the services, amenities, restaurants, and accesses one could ask for.
